Lorelai is the epitome of a sweetheart. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body, though that's proved to be crippling in situations that demand she stick up for herself or be competitive. Still, she's kind to everyone, no matter their actions towards her -- in fact, even if someone's completely stand offish or cruel, she still won't have the heart to be rude back.
Lore has a lot of trouble excluding anyone from anything. If she sees somebody sitting alone, immediately she feels bad for them and tries bringing them in for a conversation. This is about the extent of her outgoing behavior, however, for she's rather shy and afraid of rejection. She simply knows that she would hate sitting alone when a group of people were chatting nearby, so automatically she assumes that others would feel the same way.
Another reason as to why she's quiet is because of her HIV -- not only does it bring on bouts of depression, which is enough to keep her mouth shut and her mood down, but it leaves her nauseated a lot of the time. Both of these factors remind her constantly of her mistakes in the past, which leaves her regretful and frightened of what could possibly come of the future.
Death, primarily.
Lorelai is a very frightened woman. Frightened of death, of abandonment, of losing those dearest to her, of not having anyone close enough to her to lose, of her HIV becoming AIDS -- many of the time, these thoughts dwell in her mind.
Still, through everything, she tries to be optimistic, and often is able to come off as such. Deep down, she's pessimistic and paranoid, yet is able to be secretive enough to hide it. She takes pride in the fact that very few know about her disease, for she was able to keep her mouth shut about the subject.
Lorelai seems to be a classy woman, since she is used to thinking that what she did in the past was 'classy' (which it wasn't). She has a sophisticated air about her, through everything. She is also musical, with her love for playing the banjo (since she was six years old) and the piano (since she was ten). She also dabbles in vocals, but she's not nearly as strong or confident in that area and rarely sings outside of her room.
Last but not least, she is independent for almost everything -- the only thing she's dependent on is the acceptance of others. She's fully capable of taking care of herself, however, as long as she has a friend to hold her hand through the tough times. She fully intends to work for herself to get what she needs.

Heather and Roger were best friends for years, and despite the urge from the friends of both sides that they should get together, as far as they were concerned, they would never be more than friends. However, their compatibility was radiant, and their friends got discouraged, setting the two up on a 'blind date' -- with each other. They laughed it off and went along with it all, though by the end of the night, they were kissing.
Ever since then, they were destined for marriage.
Sure enough, exactly three years later they were married, and ten months after that, Lorelai was born. The three had been close, nurturing and sweet, though she didn't receive that same attention when her parents put her in social situations. She had always been very quiet and shy, which put her in the back of the class, so to speak. She began to crave the same attention she received at home, and when she didn't get it, she did everything short of acting out.
When Lorelai was nine years old, her mother announced that she was with-child -- nine months later, Billy Anchors was born, and now she wasn't even receiving the same attention at home. It was a mess. Once it was clear that her parents' attention was no longer focused on her and her alone, being upset was, more or less, an understatement.
Things in Lorelai's life were stressful yet calm until she hit High School, when she fell in with the wrong crowd -- because, of course, they were quick to give her attention. The group was a classy sort who enjoyed gathering in the basement of Logan Aster, engaging in (what they thought to be) intelligent chatter with wine and booze and, by the start of their Junior year, drugs.
The group's favorite means of getting high was injection -- someone, they couldn't be bothered to remember who, exactly, had come up with the idea that injection by needle was the more sophisticated way of doing things. Succumbing to peer pressure, she, too, spent her weekends passing needles around a circle.
No one knew
where it started, nor did anyone know exactly who had gotten it and who hadn't, but someone began spreading HIV.
A near panic swept over the group, and as three people announced to the group that they had acquired the disease, Lorelai began to worry. Finally, she got herself tested, to find that she was, in fact, HIV positive.
Naturally, her parents found out, and learned about all of those lies she had told over the years, about where she was, what she was doing. They removed her from school for the rest of her Junior year, and through a program at the hospital (and a lot of discipline), she was clean.
Lorelai has just returned to William McKinley for her Senior year of High School, doing her best to keep away from bad influences and searching for a new niche, all while keeping her disease under the radar.[/ul]
